The Rainbow Collision
Story notes: I had been following this story and had already developed some expert sources during my tenure at LA CityBeat. When my editors -- Oscar Garza and Angelo Figueroa -- said it was time to dive in, I was ready. I was still surprised at the sheer hatred some Latinos have for African-Americans. It didn't resonate with my own background. The process was an eye opener. Since the story appeared in 2005, tensions appear to have gotten worse. This year a Los Angeles High School football player who is black was gunned down by a Latino gang member in the country illegally. There is some debate, however, about whether the victim claimed a rival gang.
